SEO Website Migration Checklist: Protect What Works
A disciplined URL inventory and launch plan helps reduce avoidable search disruption during a website migration.
A disciplined URL inventory and launch plan helps reduce avoidable search disruption during a website migration.
Inventory before designing redirects
Export indexed and internally linked URLs, XML sitemaps, high-traffic pages, backlinks, media URLs and canonical targets. Map each old URL to the closest appropriate new destination. Avoid pointing every retired page at the homepage.
Preserve intent and content continuity
When pages are combined, verify that the new page meaningfully covers the old content. If a close match cannot be retained, assess whether a 404 or 410 is more appropriate than an irrelevant redirect. Keep slugs stable whenever the redesign does not require a change.
Validate technical signals on staging
Check robots controls, canonical tags, internal links, structured data, status codes and page rendering. Make sure staging noindex settings are removed only at launch. Test both desktop and mobile experience.
Launch in a controlled window
Deploy URL mappings, verify a representative set of 301 hops, update navigation and sitemaps and examine server errors. Avoid chains and loops. Monitor Search Console, analytics and logs as data becomes available.
Keep a post-launch issue register
Track missing pages, soft 404s, indexation, canonical changes and internal links still pointing through redirects. Assign owners and validate fixes. Migration performance can take time to stabilize, so establish a baseline before launch.
