Understand the counterfactual

Brand campaigns often serve people who already know the business. Some would click an organic listing or visit directly in the absence of the ad. The business question is how many additional customers, orders or conversions paid coverage causes—not merely how many conversions the ad platform attributed.

Break the account into meaningful groups

Separate brand exact match, brand plus product intent, generic acquisition terms and competitor queries. PMax or other automated formats may overlap these segments, so query visibility and campaign structure affect analysis.

Design a reversible test

Use a carefully scoped experiment with clear start and end rules. Geographic splits, temporal holdouts or other designs can work depending on volume and constraints. Decide what will be measured before launch and protect against promotions, seasonality and measurement changes.

Look beyond platform reports

Combine paid spend and clicks with organic clicks, total site demand, transactions and business outcomes. Watch whether traffic shifts rather than disappears when branded exposure changes. Evaluate uncertainty before scaling any conclusion.

Make recommendations conditional

The right answer may be to retain coverage, reduce bids, isolate parts of the query portfolio or invest savings in acquisition. Treat the test as a decision input, not a universal rule that all branded advertising is wasteful.
